I was in the Marching Band that year. This tour of Russia was by the Symphony Band which was only music majors and I was not. One of my friends was on it and told me a few stories. This tour was unprecedented for that era and attracted a lot of attention in Russia. Music by George Gershwin was particularly popular with the Russians and the Band had to send back to The States for more scores by him. This is the first time I have seen or heard any actual material from the tour.

I was a junior in highschool when we performed the Toccata in Billings 😢Symphony Orchestra, Billings Montana, during 1955. As a member of Billings Highschool Band I took it on myself to score the Toccata for our band to play. Well, we played it once with me being the director. That was long ago but I have a vivid memory of that occasion and my first and only opportunity to be on the podium. But such glorious music to this day and I still have my effort at band transcription, the conductors score and instrument parts, in my musical collection.

The Old Man retired after the 1970-71 school year. I suspect this picture was from 1971, just before we went to Europe. I was in my fourth year in the euphonium section, a rare non-music major for this group. I completely agree with @rmcelhenie, in that I believe Revelli's lessons were as valuable to me in running a business as was my UM MBA.

Thank you again and again for this incredibly beautiful example of the great Beverly Sills. I was lucky enough to hear her several times at SAN Francisco Opera in the 70s and she became my most favorite soprano. It is arias like this that allow her to remain in #1 position.

You can criticize, bash, profane Sills all you want. It’s a moot point. You will never hear singing like this again “live” in your lifetime. Estelle Liebling taught her this technique which Liebling learned from Mathilde Marchesi, who learned it from Manuel Garcia-buoyant, shimmering, effortless, dead-center pitched vibrant tone at all dynamic levels. Sadly, when Estelle Liebling died in 1970 Beverly lost her guide. She did ok without a teacher till her cancer surgery in 1974 at age 45. After that, the decline was undeniable.

My teacher and mentor was a student of Mr. Sinta in college and to this day he continues to talk about how much his playing had an affect on him. Though I've never had the chance to meet Mr Sinta I would have to agree about how incredible of player is. He too is starting to be a personal hero and idol of mine and will hopefully continue to pass down the lessons he gave my teacher, and then to me, to others in the future.

I love both Horne and Verrett enormously. Both are such amazing Mezzos though Shirley truly became a Soprano and sang the most prestigious of Soprano roles, even the killer, Norma ( and she was fantastic in it), but she often returned to Mezzo roles for the rest of her career. Marilyn was in the 1969 ASSDEFIO at La Scala, but she would not sing it again at the MET as, again, the real star was going to be Beverly Sills. Enter Shirley Verrett who was given the 1975 Assedio with Sills and Shirley hit the longest Home Run in Opera History and became a huge star. Marilyn later stated she made a big mistake in NOT taking the 1975 ASSEDIO at the Met. In this particular role, though I love both Horne and Verrett, I will lean a bit more to Shirley Verrett, with the Assedio recording confirming it all for me. I wasn't around at that time, obviously, co I'm going by what I have heard subsequently or snipets such as these on You Tube.

The miraculous finale to Umberto Giordano's ANDREA CHENIER with Franco Corelli one of the greatest ever Chéniers; the sound is not the greatest in this 1968 live snipet with Caballé's voice not captured at its best a good deal of the time..... though it does improve somewhat. I've heard Caballé sing this role of Maddalena di Coigny elsewhere and she is much more robust with a fuller tone; it's simply this particular "rare" live recording.

Great singing from all 3 artists but I do wish they had performed that memorable trio from Verdi‘s IL LOMBARDI.

Not quite. The BEST band rendition of this piece is the 1963 recording of the Irving, Texas High School Band, under the direction of Eldon Janzen. Of Janzen, William D Revelli said, "There is NO ONE that can make a band sound like Eldon Janzen can!"

I was fortunate to have studied with Justin at Stetson University back in the early 80’s. Besides being a wonderful teacher, he was a good friend as well. It’s a given that he was a musical genius. I have many fond memories of him that include a cross country drive from Florida to his home in Berkeley! What an adventure. : ) Of course it’s a tragedy that he died so young. He burned bright, but unfortunately all too briefly. His legacy lives on, as shown by the comments on this posting. Bob Rowell
